Message From Sheriff Alex Hodge

Greetings from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department – Where Teamwork Makes The Difference! As your Sheriff, I have the awesome responsibility to serve as the Chief Law Enforcement Officer for Jones County and work with an incredible team of law enforcement professionals. I cannot say thanks enough to the men and women of the Jones County Sheriff’s Department who put their lives on the line each and every day for the citizens of Jones County. We are blessed as an agency to have the best and brightest, who come to work each and every day with a mindset of serving others. These men and women bring to the table professional skills, enhanced by continual training, that provides uncommon law enforcement solutions along with the dedication to do a difficult and complex job.
I continue to ask that you keep our Deputies, Investigators, Corrections Officers and Civilian Employees in your prayers as they go about the task of providing professional, community-oriented law enforcement services to our citizens and to the visitors to Jones County. As you are aware, law enforcement is an inherently dangerous occupation and the threats to deputies and police officers around the country are on the rise. Last year, 140 law enforcement officers gave their lives in the line of duty in the United States. Regardless of the danger, our team at the Jones County Sheriff’s Department is committed to helping ensure your safety and you can count on us to respond to your calls for assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
You may have heard the phrase “Community Oriented Policing” in the news lately. It’s a phrase that is not new the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and its’ significance is what we strive for each and every day. Our staff members are deeply involved in community activities and in reaching out into each and every community in Jones County to build strong and enduring relationships with members of the many diverse people groups that call Jones County home. Our ties to these communities helps bring about an understanding of the role of law enforcement and solidifies working relationships with those we serve. It’s about getting to know your neighbor, establishing dialogue, listening to concerns and then acting on those concerns. We only fail as a community when we don’t take the steps to build bridges and increase understanding while maintaining the law and order that keeps us all safe.
As we move into what seems to be an early Spring, please be sure to keep an eye out for anything that looks suspicious in your neighborhood. Unfortunately, we have seen a rise in property crimes lately, especially burglaries and larcenies, and your vigilance can help us stop a crime in progress and/or help us put the pieces of the puzzle together to solve a crime and apprehend a criminal. Our department continues to establish safety checkpoints and operate saturation patrols funded by a Mississippi Office of Highway Safety (MOHS) grant aimed at identifying and removing drivers who are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs from our roadways. Over 10,000 people are killed each year nationally in DUI crashes and often times those victims are innocent drivers and passengers in other vehicles struck by a DUI driver. In addition, we are working to increase seat belt usage and child safety seat usage in Jones County with deputies working safety checkpoints and saturation patrols under a MOHS grant in order to provide enforcement of State of Mississippi mandated seat belt and child safety seat laws.
As your Sheriff, please know that I am available to discuss any concerns that you may have. Please feel free to call me at the Sheriff's Office at 601-425-3147 or on cell phone at 601-498-9501.
