Parolee, pot and St. Paddy's Day

A Jones County parolee with a monitor on his ankle and a little bit of "a green leafy substance" on his console on St. Patrick's Day was arrested after he fell asleep at the wheel of a vehicle on a rural road in the Rustin Community, according to the report.

Remington Hunter Maskew, 23, was charged with possession of marijuana in a vehicle and impeding traffic after a deputy with the Jones County Sheriff's Department responded to the complaint on Jessie Byrd Road just after 6 p.m. on Sunday. The 2011 Nissan Altima that was "stopped in the middle of the road" was owned by Maskew's mother.

Maskew reportedly told the driver he had fallen asleep while driving but denied taking or having any drugs. But 2.8 grams of suspected marijuana was "in plain view" in a small plastic bag on the console and seized, according to the report. It was noted that he was on probation and had on an ankle monitor.

Maskew had recently been released from the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections for vehicle theft and possession of methamphetamine. His scheduled release date, if he had served his entire sentence, was Oct. 6, 2024, according to the MDOC website.

Maskew was transported to the Jones County Adult Detention Center and will likely be taken before Judge Dal Williamson for a hearing in Jones County Circuit Court by MDOC officials for violating the terms of his release.
